FYI--Merck recalls 1 million doses of childhood vaccine

Merck & Co. is recalling about a million doses of a childhood vaccine, after testing showed a sterilization problem at its Pennsylvania plant. The company is not aware of any harm to children who received the vaccine, known as Hib, which prevents meningitis and pneumonia.

Molly Updates

Happy Thanks-giving!!

We had a great Thanksgiving holiday in Aromas. Molly met Uncle Bob and Aunt Linda for the first time and got lots of play time with cousin Ella. It will be great when Molly is more mobile--Ella has lots to teach her! Uncle Bob carved a beautiful rocking chair for Molly, who can almost sit in it by herself.

Molly had her 4 month check up (she was closer to 4 1/2 months at the appointment) and now weighs 13 lbs. and is 25 inches long. We found a great new resource on immunizations--Dr. Sears' The Vaccine Book. We are following an alternative schedule, giving her no more than 2 vaccines at a time and no two with aluminum. Jonathan has been doing a great deal of research and has become quite a resource if anyone wants to talk to him for more info.

Molly went with Megan to give a guest lecture in
Bettina Aptheker's class at UC Santa Cruz--GrammiE went too! It was great to have Molly on campus in the same lecture room that Megan remembers attending class with her mom when she was 14 years old. The day was so much fun (although perhaps not as much for GrammiE who had to change a blow out diaper on the floor in the bathroom--yuk! Thanks GrammiE!!!) Later that night, Megan spoke with Bettina in an intergenerational dialogue about feminism at the Capitola Book Cafe--such a thrill and honor!! Bettina's new book Intimate Politics is amazing! As is she.

We are looking forward to the winter holiday and a bit of a break from our crazy schedules. We are also very excited for the whole family to be together for Molly's first Christmas. We're celebrating her first Hanukkah this Saturday--such a rich childhood.

Wishing you all much peace and happiness!

Almost sitting!

Molly has been practicing sitting in her special chair. She's almost got it but we're not in any hurry. Her head and neck are getting so strong. And she is more and more animated every day. She just discovered that she can make noises and now squeals and squeaks just to hear herself! She's a talker--anyone surprised?

She's growing!

Molly had her 2 month check-up today. She weighs 9 lbs. 15 oz. and is 23 inches long. We opted to wait on her immunizations until she is a bit older. There is still so much that is unknown about the effects of immunizations and we have really struggled with what is best for Molly. After much deliberation (thanks to the many of you who have talked at length with us and shared your experiences) we've decided to postpone her first vaccination until 4 months, then have only a select few administered individually a month apart--a schedule outlined by Dr. Stephanie Cave (What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations). We have a great pediatrician who supports our decision.

In the meantime...Molly continues to be a joy. We are amazed by her every day. Today she played peek-a-boo with her special tag blanket from Grammie. She is grabbing at toys and her blanket, holds things in her hands, and occasionally (although I doubt intentionally) puts her binkie back in her mouth. Molly met her cousin Ella (2 years old) for the first time last weekend (see picture below). Ella was so sweet and gentle--she even used the back of her hand to touch Molly's cheek. Too cute! They were adorable together and will have years of friendship ahead. Molly spends Mondays and Wednesdays with dad (and often Oma) and Tuesdays and Thursdays with mom. We often have Fridays together. We hang out with the neighbors on our wonderful, kid-abundant street! We take walks and spend most of the day talking and playing (for while Molly seems to have her nights figured out and sleeps quite well--thankfully!--she is not a big sleeper during the day!)

Fall is beginning in Sacramento--our favorite season. We can't wait to share the changing color of leaves, pumpkins, Halloween, and Apple Hill with Molly. We'll keep you all posted...

Capitola, CA--Molly's first trip to the beach!

Auntie Amanda and Almost-uncle Paul have returned from working for a princess (no kidding!) in the south of France so we headed down for a welcome home visit. We all went to the 25th annual Wine and Art Festival in Capitola and later had a provencal-esque picnic at Amanda and Paul's--we even played Pétanque (French lawn bowling). So many experiences in Molly's 2 months--such a life!

Molly loves her some ladybugs!

Grammie made Molly this ladybug hanging for her nursery. We put it above the changing table. Who knew it would make changing diapers so much fun. Molly loves looking at, and talking to, the ladybugs. Here is a short video clip.

Happy Labor Day 2007!
We spent the weekend in Tahoe-Donner. Daddy and Grappa stained the cabin. It was truly a labor weekend! Grammie, mommy and Molly went for walks, visited with Linnis, played and talked! Molly is very active--she smiles and talks and can hold her head up for longer and longer periods of time. Molly entertains us well--we call it Molly-vision (instead of television) or MTV (as Jon says "molly TV"). We're all having so much fun! Can't believe how fast the time goes--Molly will be 2 months old this Friday--September 7th.
Lots of love and laughter--
Megan, Jonathan and Molly

Molly in red (her signature color!)

Quick update... we're surviving Sacramento heat barely...it has been over 100 degrees the last few days. But it does give us an excuse to have Molly wear her too cute red shades.

Jon and I are both back at work and the schedule is working out. Molly is a trooper. She's is getting used to school already!

We went by the pediatrician's today and she now weighs 9 lbs. 1 oz. so all is well.

Welcome to the world baby girl!

Molly was born on July 7, 2007 at 9:35am. She proved to be quite the "lucky" girl -- fitting her birthdate -- as she was born via emergency c-section. The team at Sutter Davis Birthing Center were amazing! When Molly's heart rate suddenly dropped off the chart they flew into action and did one of the fastest c-sections on record. With a respiratory specialist standing by, Molly was well taken care of and soon started breathing. The rest is herstory...

Now 6 weeks later, we are all doing great. Molly is a joy and we are adjusting to being a family of three. WOW how life changes! Jonathan and Megan are both back at work now. Jonathan quit his teaching job at Rio Linda Junior High so that he can be home with Molly. He was offered a shared position at a continuation high school in the same district which will allow him to be home with Molly the days Megan is teaching at Sierra College. Megan is teaching two days a week and can take Molly with her on the other days. A real shared effort (as it should be!).

Molly smiles, coos, and even laughs a bit. She is tracking objects and talking up a storm! She is even getting used to the near constant flash of dad's picture taking! She's just adorable and we all couldn't be happier.

Lots of Love and Laughter

Megan, Jonathan and Molly
